![]() Alumni Spotlight: Tammy Sciera
We asked Tammy five questions about herself, her life and her experiences with TC3. The following are her answers. Please tell us about yourself. My name is Tammy Demeree Sciera, and I graduated from TC3 back in the mid-80s. Prior to attending TC3, I attended Homer High School. And, I currently reside in the Homer School District. I am married (to husband, Greg), and have three children (John, 15, Bradley, 12, and Madison, 5). After graduating from TC3, I attended Syracuse University, where I earned an undergraduate degree, and a master’s degree in business administration. Following graduation, I worked for 13 years at Marietta Corporation, beginning as an intern and eventually achieving the position of vice president of business development before leaving in 2001. What are you doing now?I am the executive director of the J.M. McDonald Sports Complex in Cortland. Previously, I worked with the Cortland Sports Complex Board of Directors as a marketing consultant on its capital campaign from 2002 to 2004, until the facility opened in September 2004. Then, I became a part-time employee responsible for marketing and sales until I was hired full time in the summer of 2004 in my current position. My work at the McDonald Center is rewarding and is well-suited for my personal interests in sports and recreation, having three children actively participating in a variety of sports and activities. 3) What is your biggest accomplishment? Before coming to the McDonald Center, my biggest personal accomplishment was becoming the first female VP at Marietta Corporation. Since then, I have worked diligently with the Sports Complex Board of Directors to achieve a solid financial position for the center to begin to establish a positive cash flow for the business. My new personal goal is to see the $1.7 million dollar debt still held by the McDonald center be absolved in the next five years. This will ensure financial stability for the future of this valuable community asset. What is your fondest memory of TC3?I suppose I do not have a specific memory of TC3, but an overall feeling. Being the first born in a family of six children, I recall a feeling of independence in my life for the first time. I enjoyed everything, from driving to class, having breaks where I could enjoy some study time in the different lounges throughout the building, to the first time I received a report card with a 4.0 GPA, and working part-time to pay for books and gas. TC3 had a wonderful environment and atmosphere to foster my independence. The college gave me an opportunity to begin to find my own path in life as an adult. Other comments or thoughts? It is encouraging to see how TC3 has grown so dramatically over the years, and to see it become a valuable center of higher education in our community. Keep up the good work. Remember, it is NEVER to late to return to school. Strive to improve and challenge yourselves daily. Start slow, try auditing a class and take a subject you really love. Getting back into the "college" groove will become so much easier, and TC3 is the place to do it.
