Our Stories

Learning with the starsHollywood

It's snowing in Dryden, almost perpetually in January, but a group of TC3 students and Communications and Media Arts Chair Chris Xaver, Ph.D., along with Instructor Christine Guest, are not the least bit concerned with the cold. Because they're in Hollywood.

Guest and Xaver, along with about 20 students, took the trip as part of a special "Television and Film Research – On Location" class offered at TC3. Students visited with industry insiders in Los Angeles and San Francisco, meeting with employees at Pixar, and more. It's not something you find at a lot of community colleges, but it's another example of TC3's commitment to seeking creative, real-world experiences for students striving to achieve their vision of success.

Another way TC3's teaching staff reaches students is by relating to them on their own terms – and that means embracing technology. In the spring 2009 semester, TC3 Campus Technology and adjunct instructor Janet Ochs collaborated to implement RAVE text messaging and Apple wireless iPod Touch devices into the classroom.

Campus Technology established RAVE class groups for Janet's classes, enabling text messages to be sent to student cell phones. As a result, students in Janet Ochs' computer application courses received text messages regarding important class information and quiz dates. Students reported that the text messages were very helpful and served as reminders for quizzes and other important class information.
