Human Services, 2008
Justine Lewis got a head start on her college education by taking dual-credit courses in high school through Tompkins Cortland Community College. And that may lead her all the way to London in the spring of 2008.
“The thing that most drew me to TC3 was the dual-credit program,” she says. “I’d taken some courses through my high school, and I was like ‘woah,’ let’s just go there. It will be awesome.”
Justine, who graduated from Newark Valley High School, has been recognized not only for her excellent academic work at TC3, but also for her dedication to community service. The first-year student was a recipient of the TC3 Foundation’s Service Tradition Scholarship, which rewards students who demonstrate a strong dedication to academics and community service.
“I work at the library (in Newark Valley) and daycare centers, volunteering my time,” she says.
In addition to the scholarship and dual-credit experience, Justine says she was drawn to TC3’s strong Human Services program.
“I’ve always known I wanted to be a social worker,” she says. “So the Human Services program was such a great draw for me. I knew that it would help me get where I wanted to be. … And TC3 has been so wonderful in helping me narrow down what I really want to be, which is a therapist. There are so many great opportunities here I’ve been able to get involved in to help me focus on that.”
And, as for London?
“(My advisor) said ‘you have to do an internship for Human Services,’ and you can either do it locally or abroad,” she says. “I (said) alright, sign me up, let’s do it abroad.”
