CollegeNow@TC3 Recognizes Local High Schools
April 19, 2007
DRYDEN, N.Y. — The TC3 CollegeNow program has honored three local high school educators for their outstanding service. Babette Carr of Groton High School, Mary Warner of Cincinnatus High School, and Michele Hughes of Cortland High School were honored at a banquet April 18.
The banquet brought together school superintendents, principals, counselors, and teachers from 30 local school districts along with TC3 faculty liaisons to honor their roles in giving high school students the opportunity to take challenging courses and earn college credit through TC3's CollegeNow Dual Credit program. "We are extremely impressed with the dedication of these educators who willingly take on extra work and responsibility to provide their students with a head start, not only by earning college credit in high school, but by developing the habits of learning that will give them the tools they need for their futures," says Karl Madeo, director of CollegeNow. "We value the partnerships we have with these school districts, and this is one small way we can say thank you."
Carr has won the "Distinguished Dual Credit Teacher" award for her work with several dual credit courses. The dual credit program allows high school students to earn both high school and college credit, giving the students a head start towards their college degree at no cost. Carr has been teaching dual credit classes at Groton for eight years, including business math, college success seminar, and cooperative work experience. She has used field trips and guest speakers to develop valuable community ties that benefit her students.
Warner has been named the "Distinguished Tech Prep Teacher." Tech Prep is a federally funded program designed to help high school students gain experience and coursework to prepare them for college and careers by working closely with local industry leaders. Warner made innovative use of a Tech Prep mini grant to initiate an online radio station run by Cincinnatus students. Her frequent collaboration with the TC3 communication and media arts and new media programs provides her students with first-hand knowledge of the latest directions in the fields.
Hughes won the "Counselor Recognition" award, the first time this award has been given. She was nominated by the TC3 CollegeNow staff for her outstanding work in coordinating the registration process for the dual credit courses offered at Cortland High. Her willingness to take on tasks that facilitate a successful process for teachers, students, and the CollegeNow office was noted.
TC3's CollegeNow program partners with 30 high schools and over 200 teachers to offer college credit courses to nearly 3,000 high school students in the central New York region. These instructors have been certified by TC3 academic departments to teach the same rigorous curriculum as the courses offered on the TC3 campus. High school students in these partner schools can also earn college credit through TC3 online courses.
