International Admissions

Tompkins Cortland Community College enrollment is approximately 3,200, divided evenly between full- and part-time students (full-time is defined as enrollment in 12 or more credit hours). International students on F-1 visas have to be enrolled for a minimum of 12 credits. Other international students may enroll as either part-time or full-time students.)

Classes are offered both day and evening, with evening classes held on campus and at several extension centers in the area for your convenience.

Students who hold or will hold a high school diploma prior to enrollment will be offered admission to the college. However, certain curricula, such as nursing, require specific academic credentials. Admission to these programs will be based upon an evaluation of the applicant's credentials or special achievements to date.

It is very important that you submit applications containing complete and accurate credentials. As an open admission institution, we encourage those students who do not meet traditional entrance requirements to apply. Students who do not meet traditional entrance requirements will be required to take placement testing. Students who are seeking admission on an F-1 visa should follow the procedures outlined below. Other international students should contact Colleen Armstrong to determine the correct application procedure.:

  • Read and fill out the application completely and accurately. Forms FSA-1, 2, 3, and 4 must be returned directly to the Office of Admissions at Tompkins Cortland Community College. Please make sure that the forms listed below are completed and signed.
  • Submit evidence of your proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English to pursue college level work. Students of non-English speaking countries must take the TOEFL and expect a minimum score of 450 (paper-based) or 133 (computer-based). General Certificate of Education (GCE) may be submitted in place of TOEFL. The GCE must have five passes, including English. International students already residing in the United States may be waived TOEFL requirements.
  • All candidates are required to submit official transcripts from all schools, universities, and colleges attended. Certified translation of each transcript into English must be provided if the documents are not in English.
  • All candidates must submit evidence of their financial support by completing the International Student Financial Statement (FSA-4) with the application. For an estimated student budget, please see Student Budget Estimate.

The college reserves the right to require a deposit equal to one year’s tuition. This deposit will be forfeited if a student fails to complete enrollment as outlined in the letter of acceptance. Upon receipt of the tuition deposit, the required visa authorizations will be forwarded to the student.
