Practical Nurse Admissions

Practical nurses (LPNs, LVNs) may apply for advanced standing in the nursing program. Practical nurses who have college credits for their nursing courses may be eligible to apply as transfer students, see section on transfer applicants. Practical nurses who do not have college credits for nursing courses are eligible to apply for admission into the second year of the program once the following admission eligibility criteria have been met:

  • The following documents must be on file in the enrollment services center by May 15, 2007: TC3 application form; Nursing program personal statement form; official high school transcript (or GED certificate); PN program transcript and college transcripts (if any); PN license; and a letter of reference from a current nursing supervisor, a recent employer, or a faculty member.
  • The following courses must have been completed at TC3 or transferred to TC3 from another regionally accredited college: ENGL 101, PSYC 103, SOCI 101, CAPS 121 or 131, BIOL 131 and BIOL 132.
  • The NY PN to RN transition course must be successfully completed. Successful completion of this course qualifies the applicant to be granted 16 credits of nursing at TC3. The transition course is offered at TC3 as NURS 102.
  • A plan for completing the math course requirements of the Nursing program must be in place. Practical nurse applicants may waive MATH 107 since medication calculations are part of the practical nurse training. The applicant should speak with a nursing advisor before deciding on a plan for completing the math requirements.

Admission decisions will be based on college grade average, grades in required science and math courses, personal statement of application, and a letter of reference. Practical nurses who are admitted into the second year of the nursing program must complete the program within two years. Other progression and readmission policies are the same as for other students. Admissions decisions will be sent out on June 1, 2007. PN applicants completing prerequisites during the summer of 2007 may be considered for admissions on a space-available basis.
