Fair Use Guidelines as Applied to
Library Services

Placing Material on Reserve

Copyrighted materials that are duplicated and placed on print or electronic reserve must meet all standards for Fair Use. Permission from copyright owners will be necessary in the following instances:

  • if the item is to be on reserve more than one semester.
  • if the item has been obtained through the Interlibrary Loan system.

To ensure copyright compliance, faculty will be asked to complete a Reserve Form for items submitted.

Requesting Interlibrary Loan Items

The library adheres to established Fair Use Guidelines of the Commission on New Technological Uses of Copyrighted Works (CONTU) when fulfilling your requests for items via Interlibrary Loan. Records are maintained to ensure that there is no intent to substitute copying for a paid subscription to, or purchase of, a work. However, it is a very rare instance when we cannot fulfill your Interlibrary Loan request.
