Browsing the Nursing Collection

The call numbers for nursing are RT. If you can't find what you are looking for by browsing the shelves, please consult the TC3 Library Catalog, the SUNY Union Catalog or WorldCat to find books at other libraries. If you need help, ask a librarian in person or use the Ask-A-Librarian service.

Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH)

You can search for materials in the Library's catalog by keyword or Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). The red, five-volume set, Library of Congress Subject Headings, is located in front of the reference desk, next to the TC3 Books and Media Catalog computers terminals. Specific subject headings are far too numerous to list on this page. Here are just a few examples of LCSH in Nursing:

Articles and Databases

Tompkins Cortland Community College Library subscribes to a number of Electronic Databases which provide access to abstracts or full-text articles from journals and newspapers. You can also consult our list of Periodical Titles in Full Text Electronic Format. There are options to search by publication title or browse journals in selected subjects. Recommended subjects include: Health & Biological Sciences and Nursing. The TC3 also Library subscribes to many Nursing Journals that are available for reading in the library.

TC3 Databases for Periodicals and Full-Text Articles

Subscription databases which may be searched to locate full-text articles on nursing and allied health issues. You may access them from any computer with Internet access if you input your TC3 ID number.

  • CINAHL Plus with Full Text - Subscription database provides full text for 391 journals and indexing for 3,123 journals in the fields of nursing and allied health. Includes legal cases, clinical innovations, critical paths, drug records, research instruments and clinical trials. Includes Pre-CINAHL, which provides current awareness of new journal articles.
  • Gale Virtual Reference Library - Subscription database consists of over 100 standard academic reference encyclopedias, almanacs, and specialized reference sources for multidisciplinary research. See list of included reference books.
  • Health Reference Center Academic
  • - Subscription database provides citations, abstracts, and full-text articles on fitness, pregnancy, medicine, nutrition, diseases, public health, occupational health and safety, alcohol and drug abuse, HMOs, prescription drugs, etc.
  • MasterFile Premier - Subscription database with full text for over 770 periodicals covering nearly all subjects including general reference, business, social sciences, science, health, and much more.
  • MEDLINE - Over 12,000,00 records from 1965 to the present, most with substantial abstracts, covering all areas of medicine, including dentistry and nursing.
  • PubMed - A service of the National Library of Medicine, PubMed provides access to over 12 million MEDLINE citations back to the mid-1960's and additional life science journals. It includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources. (Abstracts only - no full-text)
  • PsycArticles - Subscription database provides more than 34,000 full-text articles from 43 journals published by American Psychological Association and allied organizations. All journals included in this database are peer-reviewed and full-text.
  • ScienceDirect - Subscription database provides access to over 700 full-text Elsevier journals in the sciences, social sciences, nursing, medicine and psychology.

Open Access Journals, Databases, Directories, and Repositories

Scholarly articles are increasingly available for free in many open access journals and digital repositories. Even if you can't access the full text, you can search for peer-reviewed articles.

  • ClinicalTrials.gov - "Regularly updated information about federally and privately supported clinical research in human volunteers. ClinicalTrials.gov gives you information about a trial's purpose, who may participate, locations, and phone numbers for more details."
  • Directory of Open Access Journals - Free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals.
  • High Wire Press - Archive for free, online full text science articles.
  • PubMed - Database of the National Library of Medicine includes over 15 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's. These citations are from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources. UseMeSH Browser to locate Medical subject headings used by the National Library of Medicine
  • The National Academies - The National Academies consists of four organizations: the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council. They "address critical national issues and give advice to the federal government and the public." You can access resources (journals, news, etc.) by Topic. Topics include: Agriculture, Behavioral and Social Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Environmental Issues, Health and Medicine, plus more.
  • National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM)
  • SciELO: Scientific Electronic Library Online - Website provides free access to journals from Brazil and other Latin America and Caribbean countries. Available in three languages: ENGLISH, ESPAÑOL, PORTUGUÊS.
  • Science Tracer Bullets - Library of Congress series contains research guides that help you locate information on science and technology subjects.
  • TOXNET - National Library of Medicine database on toxicology, hazardous chemicals, environmental health, and toxic releases.
