Each week during the sports seasons, TC3 recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of a student athlete.
Nakia (Middletown H.S./Middletown) played a big role in the Panthers best weekend of the season. Taking part in the SUNY Broome POD, Tompkins Cortland won three out of four matches, moving the team's season record to 4-8 in Region III play. Nakia finished the day with a strong line of 27 digs, 11 kills, 7 aces, and 5 assists as the Panthers won 9 out 13 sets on the day.
Corey (Southside H.S./Elmira) posted his first shutout of the season this week, recording five saves in support of a 2-0 Panthers win Saturday over Erie. Earlier in the week the sophomore had one of the best games ever by a goalie on the Tompkins Cortland field, turning away 12 shots in a double overtime 1-0 loss to nationally-ranked Herkimer. Several of the saves were spectacular as Corey kept the game tied for 100 minutes of play.
Jason (Mynderse Academy/Seneca Falls) had a big game in the Panthers 4-0 win over Niagara on Wednesday. The freshman played a role in the first three scores, netting the first goal in the 16th minute, assisting on the second goal in the 32nd minute, and scoring another goal in the 57th minute. The five points in one game set a new career high for Jason, who now leads the team in both points (9) and goals (4) this season.
Cali (Coventry H.S./Coventry, Conn.) led the Panthers to a perfect week, scoring in each of the team's three wins. In Wednesday's 3-2 victory at Jefferson, Daly netted her first collegiate hat-trick. Saturday saw her score another goal and hand out an assist in the 7-0 win at Clinton. The week ended with a 2-1 win at North Country, with Cali again picking up an assist. Two weeks into the season she leads the team with four goals and two assists, playing a role in half the team's goals.
Nick (McGraw H.S./McGraw) started his sophomore season in style, registering a goal and three assists over the first two games. In Saturday's 6-2 win over Holyoke, he had two assists in the first half, including on the team's first goal of the year. He added a goal on a header in the second half of the team's win. In Sunday's game with Brookdale, Nick assisted on the game-tying goal, a pretty pass to a header. His five points this season leads the team in scoring.
