Panthers Drop Third Straight

Sunday, March 29, 2015

TC3 lacrosse

The Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse team has proven to be a streaky team this season. Playing at home on Sunday, the Panthers lost to Finger Lakes Community College by a final score of 15-4. It marks the third straight loss for the Panthers, all coming on the heels of a three-game winning streak. TC3’s record is now 3-4 overall, 2-2 in Region III, and 1-1 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. Finger Lakes improves to 5-1 overall, 3-1 in Region III, and 1-1 in the MSAC.

The two streaks have coincided with a dramatic difference in offensive output. In the three games the Panthers won, TC3 averaged nearly 13 goals per game. During the skid, the offense has scored just 14 goals total in three games. On Sunday, Finger Lakes scored the first four goals on route to a 6-1 halftime lead. Each team scored once in the third before the visiting Lakers blew the game open with an 8-2 advantage in the fourth.

Luke Stevenson (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca) led TC3 with two goals and an assist. Ian Henrichsen (New Roots H.S./Freeville) had a goal and a helper and Nick Velazquez (Middletown H.S./Middletown) found the net once. Brian Litzenberger (Cortland H.S./Cortland) also picked up an assist for the Panthers while Eh Tha Dah (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca) had 13 saves in goal.

Dramatic Season-Ending Win for TC3 Lacrosse

Saturday, April 20, 2013

The Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse team picked the last day of the season to have its most exciting game. Playing at home against Herkimer County Community College, the Panthers led most of the way before Herkimer rallied to tie the score late, setting the stage for a dramatic 12-10 win for TC3. The victory ends TC3’s season with a record of 2-10 overall and 1-5 in the East Division and keeps Herkimer from reaching .500 in the East Division, ending their year with an East Division record of 2-4 and an overall mark of 5-8.

Mike Hartnett (Cortland H.S./Cortland) opened the scoring, giving TC3 the lead a minute into the game. Austin Recor (Homer H.S./Homer) made it 2-0 before Herkimer got on the board. Stephen Park (Homer H.S./Homer) put one in to make it 3-1 and Hartnett found the net again with 0.5 seconds on the clock to make it 4-1 after the first quarter. Hartnett made it 5-1 midway through the second quarter, but Herkimer used a 3-0 run over the closing minutes of the half to make it 5-4 at the intermission.

The Generals continued the run with a game-tying goal in the first minute of third, but TC3 answered by scoring four of the next five goals, including three by Park, to make it 9-6 heading into the final quarter. Tyler West (Cortland H.S./Cortland) found the net five minutes into the fourth to make the score 10-6, but Herkimer again rallied, scoring four straight to tie the game at 10-10 with 3:40 left on the clock.

Ninety seconds later, Hartnett put the Panthers back on top with his fifth goal of the game. Looking for a chance to tie, the Generals managed several shots in the closing minutes, but TC3 goalie Zach Brown (Corning East H.S./Corning) came up big, including stopping two point-blank shots with just over a minute left. The Panthers regained control in the final seconds, and Park put the icing on the game with a goal in the closing moments, making the final 12-10.

Park had a career-high five goals and Hartnett finished with five goals and two assists. Brown had a huge game with 16 saves.

TC3 Drops Home Game to Nation's #5-Ranked Team

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

The Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse team had a surprise home game Wednesday, hosting the #5-ranked SUNY Delhi Broncos when Delhi’s field was deemed unplayable Wednesday morning. The Panthers played well but couldn’t make up for a slow start, falling by a final of 12-6. TC3 is now 1-10 overall and 0-5 in the East Division. Delhi is 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the East Division.

The game opened with Delhi controlling play early, jumping to a 4-0 lead. TC3 finally broke through seconds into the second quarter, with Stephen Park (Homer H.S./Homer) scoring to make it 4-1. After a Delhi goal, Mike Hartnett (Cortland H.S./Cortland) found the net to make it 5-2. The Broncos answered a minute later, making the score 6-2 at the half.

The second half started much like the first, with Delhi going on a run. The Broncos scored the first three goals of the quarter to lead 9-2. TC3 responded by scoring three of the next four, including three more from Park, to make it 10-5 in the first minute of the fourth quarter. The rally ended there as the Panthers couldn’t get any closer the rest of the way.

Park finished with four goals. Hartnett had two goals and an assist and Chad Timmons (Cortland H.S./Cortland) had one assist. Goalie Zach Brown (Corning East H.S./Corning) had a strong game with 14 saves.

TC3 Lacrosse Drops Home Game to Dean College

Sunday, April 14, 2013

The visiting Dean College (Mass.) Bulldogs used a big fourth quarter to blow open Sunday’s game against Tompkins Cortland Community College, beating the Panthers by a final of 19-5. TC3 trailed 8-3 after three quarters but gave up 11 goals in the final quarter of the non-region loss. TC3 is now 1-9 this year while Dean improves to 5-3.

Stephen Park (Homer H.S./Homer) and Anthony Gallegro (East Rockaway H.S./East Rockaway) each scored in the fourth for the Panthers, while goalie Zach Brown (Corning East H.S./Corning) registered 14 saves on the day.

Panthers Drop Road Game at Mohawk Valley

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

Playing on the road for just the third time this season and on natural grass for the first time, the Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse team continued to struggle, losing to Mohawk Valley Community College 12-5 Wednesday. TC3 is now 1-8 overall and 0-4 in East Division. It was the first win in eight games this year for Mohawk Valley.

The Panthers never led, with Mohawk Valley ahead 2-1 after the first quarter and 7-4 at the half. TC3 tried to rally, but any momentum they hoped to gain was halted by a 30-minute lightning delay early in the third quarter.

Mike Hartnett (Cortland H.S./Cortland) led TC3 with three goals and two assists. Austin Recor (Homer H.S./Homer) had two goals and Lon Palmer (Oneida H.S./Oneida) picked up an assist. TC3 goalie Zach Brown (Corning East H.S./Corning) had 12 saves.

Panthers Overwhelmed at Home

Saturday, April 06, 2013

The Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse team played host to the top team in the nation Saturday, and the result was a lopsided loss for the Panthers. Four-time defending national champion Onondaga Community College overwhelmed TC3 by a final score of 23-1. TC3 drops to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in East Division play while Onondaga improves to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in the East Division.

The game started well for the Panthers, keeping Onondaga off the board for the first seven minutes. The visitors ripped off five quick goals in a four minute span before TC3’s Mike Hartnett (Cortland H.S./Cortland) found the net for the home team. TC3 goalie Zach Brown (Corning East H.S./Corning) had a strong game in goal, recording 14 saves.

Struggles Continue for Panthers

Wednesday, April 03, 2013

The struggles continued for the Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse team Wednesday as another slow start snowballed into a 14-6 home loss to Hudson Valley Community College. TC3 drops to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in East Division play. Hudson Valley evens its record at 2-2 overall while moving to 2-0 in the East Division.

The game followed a familiar pattern for the Panthers – fall behind big early, fight to get back into the game, and then fall victim to another opposition rally. Wednesday Hudson Valley scored five goals in the first ten minutes before Stephen Park (Homer H.S./Homer) got the Panthers on the board with 3:05 left in the quarter. A Hudson Valley goal in the closing seconds made it 6-1 after the first quarter.

In the second, Chad Timmons (Cortland H.S./Cortland) and Tyler West (Cortland H.S./Cortland) netted back-to-back scores to make it 6-3, but just when it looked liked the Panthers would make a game of it, Hudson Valley ripped off three scores to close the half with a 9-3 lead. The Vikings continued the rally in the third, scoring the first four goals to take a commanding 13-3 lead. Mike Hartnett (Cortland H.S./Cortland) scored twice and West added another goal before the quarter ended with the score 14-6. The score held to the final horn as neither team found the net in the fourth quarter.

Things don’t get any easier for the Panthers Saturday as TC3 plays host to top-ranked Onondaga Community College at 1 p.m.

Zach Brown (Corning East H.S./Corning) had a busy day in goal, registering twenty-five saves. Late Rally Drops Panthers

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

The Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse suffered a disappointing loss at home Wednesday, giving up the final four goals of the game to fall to Jefferson Community College 17-16. The loss drops TC3 to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in East Division play. Jefferson is now 1-4 overall and 1-0 in the East Division.

The visiting Cannoneers jumped out early, scoring the first four goals before TC3’s Mike Hartnett (Cortland H.S./Cortland) found the net to put the home team on the board with 3:40 left in the quarter. After a Jefferson score, Stephen Park (Homer H.S./Homer) put one in just before the horn sounded, making it 5-2 after the first.

The Panthers continued to rally in the second, netting three straight to tie it at 5-5 on Chad Timmons’ (Cortland H.S./Cortland) second goal of the game. The teams traded a pair of goals before Jefferson scored with 6.4 second left to take an 8-7 lead into the half.

The third quarter saw TC3 come out on fire, scoring six times in the first ten minutes to take a 13-8 lead. Jefferson used three straight to pull within two, but Tyler West (Cortland H.S./Cortland) found the net with 32.4 seconds left in the quarter to make it 14-11 heading into the final quarter.

A score by Lon Palmer (Oneida H.S./Oneida) ten seconds into the fourth made it 15-11, but Jefferson answered with two scores to pull within two at 15-13. The lead grew to 16-13 with 4:20 left on a score by Hartnett, but the visitors ended the game the way they started – scoring four straight goals, with the final score giving Jefferson a 17-16 lead with 1:32 left. TC3 won the ensuing faceoff, and after a timeout, a Hartnett shot went off the post and another shot sailed wide before Jefferson took over. The Panthers forced a turnover, but was unable to get another shot at tying the game.

Hartnett again led TC3 with six points on four goals and two assists. Park and Timmons each had five points, with Park netting four goals and an assists and Timmons tallying two goals and three assists. Panthers Fade in Home Loss

Saturday, March 16, 2013

A strong start wasn’t enough for the Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse team as the Panthers lost at home 10-3 to Broome Community College Saturday. The Panthers are now 1-2 while Broome improves to 2-2.

Things looked good early for the home team as Chad Timmons (Cortland H.S./Cortland) put the Panthers up 1-0 two minutes into the game. After Broome tied the score, the Panthers scored four straight, including three by Mike Hartnett (Cortland H.S./Cortland), to lead 5-1 early in the second quarter. Broome broke the run with a score with 11:39 left in the half, but Stephen Park (Homer H.S./Homer) made it 6-2 with his second goal of the game. Broome responded to make it 6-3 before Hartnett found the net gain to give TC3 a 7-3 lead with 5:00 left in the half. The visitors began to chip away at the lead with two scores in the closing minutes of the half to make the score 7-5 at the break.

A scoreless third quarter left TC3 15 minutes away from a win, but used a spurt of four goals over a span of 2:20 to move in front 9-7 with 10:20 left in the game. While TC3 continued to struggle to mount an attack, the Hornets added an insurance goal with 1:18 left to make the final 10-7.

Panthers Roll to First Win

Wednesday, March 13, 2013

A huge night from Mike Hartnett (Cortland H.S./Cortland) and the entire defense helped lead the Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse team to a 10-3 win over Cayuga Community College Wednesday. The first win of the season evens the Panthers’ record at 1-1 on the year. Cayuga is also 1-1.

Hartnett was a one-man wrecking crew early on, scoring the game’s first four goals, all in the first quarter. Lon Palmer (Oneida H.S./Oneida) made it 5-0 in the second quarter, followed by another score by Hartnett and a goal by Austin Recor (Homer H.S./Homer) to make it 7-0 at the half.

Cayuga finally got on the board in the fourth before Hartnett netted his sixth goal. Saturday, March 09, 2013

The Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse season got off to a rocky start Saturday, with the Panthers dropping a home game to County College of Morris (N.J.), 14-12. It was the third game of the year for Morris, and their first win.

The game was back-and-forth most of the way, with the teams trading goals before TC3 put together a string of four straight in the second quarter to lead 6-3, the last score coming from Mike Hartnett (Cortland H.S./Cortland) off and assist from Tyler West (Cortland H.S./Cortland) with 6:45 left before half. Morris scored seconds later to snap the streak, but Stephen Park (Homer H.S./Homer) made it 7-4 off an assist from Chad Timmons (Cortland H.S./Cortland) with 4:36 left in the half. Morris managed two more scores, including one with 5.8 seconds left in the half, to cut the Panthers lead to 7-6 at the break.

Morris made it three scores in a row early in the third, tying the game at 7-7. TC3 responded with goals by Austin Recor (Homer H.S./Homer) and Park to make it 9-7, but Morris again netted a late score to make it 9-8 after three quarters. The visitors continued their rally in the fourth, tying the game 1:20 into the period, and pushing ahead with four more unanswered. With eight minute left on the clock, the Panthers trailed 13-8.
