Win Streak Snapped at Monroe

Wednesday, March 25, 2015

Heading into Wednesday’s game at Monroe Community College, the Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse team had been on a roll. Since a season-opening 6-2 loss, TC3 had been scoring goals in bunches, outscoring the opposition by a combined total of 38-to-11 during a three-game winning streak. But Wednesday against the Tribunes, the offense struggled, managing just 10 shots on goal in a 7-5 loss. TC3’s record drops to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in Region III. Monroe improves to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in Region III.

The Panthers never led. Monroe scored in the third minute of play, but TC3 tied it at 1-1 with a goal by DaShawn White (Bay Shore H.S./Bay Shore). The Tribunes answered quickly to regain the lead at 2-1, a score that held until the end of the first quarter. In the second, TC3 again tied the game, this time with Brian Litzenberger (Cortland H.S./Cortland) netting the equalizer. A Monroe goal closed out the scoring in the half, making the score 3-2 at the break.

The home team was the first to find the net in the third quarter, extending the lead to 4-2 before Nick Velazquez (Middletown H.S./Middletown) got into the scoring column to pull the Panthers within one at 4-3 midway through the third. Unfortunately for the Panthers, the score would get no closer the rest of the way, as Monroe netted two straight to lead 6-3 early in the fourth. Brent Enslow (Harrisville H.S./Brooktondale) cut the deficit to 6-4, but a goal by Monroe with 2:27 left made it 7-4. Velazquez added his second goal with just over a minute left, but it wasn’t enough to spark a rally as the final horn sounded with the score 7-5.

TC3 goalie Eh Tha Dah (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca) was busy all afternoon, making 15 saves to keep the game close.

TC3 returns home Friday for a non-region game against Dean College (Mass.) at 6 p.m.

Record-Setting Win for Panthers

Saturday, March 22, 2014

Two Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse players put their names in the record books Saturday as the Panthers rolled to a 21-11 win over Northampton Community College( (Penn.). The win improves TC3 to 2-3 on the year while Northampton falls to 0-2.

The win was historic for two Panthers. Prior to Saturday, the TC3 single-game goal scoring record was seven goals, set by Brandon Macera in 2008. The mark had been tied twice, but never surpassed. That is, until Saturday, when two different Panthers turned the trick. Nick Velazquez (Middletown H.S./Middletown) is the new record holder after scoring 10 goals. Second place on the TC3 record list now belongs to Max Bosworth (Keene H.S./Keene, N.H.) after he found the net eight times. The two powered the offense that also put the team in the record books: the 21-goal total marks the second most prolific scoring game in TC3 lacrosse history (23 vs. Dean College in 2008).

TC3 hosts Finger Lakes Community College Wednesday. The game was originally scheduled to be a road game for the Panthers but was moved to TC3's turf field due to conditions at Finger Lakes.
