Panthers Come Up Just Short Against Top Ten Team

Sunday, August 30, 2015

TC3 soccer

The Tompkins Cortland Community College women’s soccer team hosted its second nationally-ranked team the weekend Sunday with a match-up against #9 ranked Hudson Valley Community College. Like in Saturday’s tie with Holyoke Community College (Mass.), the Panthers put up a strong defensive effort. But unlike Saturday’s scoreless tie, Sunday’s effort came up a little short as the visiting Viking posted a 1-0 win. The loss drops the Panthers to 0-1-1 overall and 0-1-0 in Region III. Hudson Valley improves to 2-0-0 overall and in Region III.

Much like the previous day, the home team had plenty of chances. The Panthers earned eight corner kicks, but managed to put just four shots on goal as the Hudson Valley defense did a good job keeping the Panthers from capitalizing on the scoring chances. On the other end, the Vikings managed more shots, despite have less time of possession. The only shot that made it through came midway through the second half, as a Hudson Valley player slipped through the defense and slid a shot past Tompkins Cortland goalie Molly Graves (Newark Valley H.S./Newark Valley).

One day after a double-overtime shutout, Graves had another great game in goal. She recorded six saves and made several additional good plays.

The Panthers look to continue the strong defense while getting the offense going when the team take to the road for the first time Wednesday, opening the Mid-State Athletic Conference schedule at Jefferson Community College.
