Offensive Struggles Continue for TC3 Women

Sunday, December 07, 2014

Cold-shooting and too many turnovers combined to spell defeat for the Tompkins Cortland Community College women’s basketball team Sunday, as the Panthers fell to Herkimer College 63-41. The loss leaves TC3’s record at 3-6 overall and 2-4 in Region III play. Herkimer is now 4-4 overall and in region.

After holding an early four-point lead, the Panthers saw the visiting Generals rally to hold a six-point lead midway through the first half. Trailing 20-14, TC3 used a 9-4 run to pull within one, but Herkimer responded with a 12-5 run to close the half with a 36-28 lead.

The start of the second half saw the Panthers fall deeper in the hole. It took TC3 eight minutes to score its first points of the half, and by that time Herkimer had extended the lead to 46-28. The home ream wasn’t able to pull closer than 15 the rest of the way, with the lead peaking at 24 points in the closing minutes for the Generals.

The Panthers struggled on the offensive end all game, shooting just 22.2% from the field and 45.8% from the free throw line. The team had 35 turnovers, including 21 in the second half. No Panther reached double figures in scoring, as Sierra Stoppkotte (Greene H.S./Greene) led the team with nine points. Leemu Yarkpawolo (Renaissance Charter School for Innovation/Manhattan) grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds and Jenna Bowman (Waverly H.S./Waverly) had 10 rebounds and eight points for the Panthers.

The Panthers close out the fall semester portion of the schedule Thursday at Hudson Valley Community College.

Coaches–Women's Basketball

David Stevenson

Head Coach

Dave StevensonMSAC Coach of the Year
2010, 2013, 2014

Coach Stevenson takes over the women's basketball program for the 2014-15 season after the most successful run in the history of the TC3 men's basketball program. Over the last decade directing the men's program, Coach Stevenson's teams continued to establish new records for wins, topping 20 victories three times, and winning the Mid-State Athletic Conference championship three times (including the last two seasons).

Stevenson joined the men's basketball staff as an assistant in 2003-04, bringing a strong work ethic and knowledge of the game to the floor each night. He is well known for caring for his students both on and off the court, tracking academic progress as well as developing basketball skills. He has worked hard to bring quality players into the program, and to help those players continue their careers at the four-year level. In his time with the program, he has helped players earn scholarships to Mercy College in New York, Drake University in Iowa, and Avila University in Kansas. His former players have also shown up on the rosters at Buffalo State, Oneonta State, Oswego State, Old Westbury College, Morrisville State, Southwestern Oklahoma State, SUNY Fredonia, and Daniel Webster College in New Hampshire. A former standout athlete at Trumansburg High and a college baseball player, Coach Stevenson is TC3's assistant athletic director. He is also an assistant softball coach for the Panthers.

Jeff Riker

Assistant Coach

Jeff Riker

Coach Ricker returns for his fifth season on the bench with the women's program. A strong recruiter and teacher on the court, he has been instrumental in bringing in the program's top players and helping them reach their potential. His passion for the game extends back to when he was an IAC all-star at Dryden High. He played college ball at Onondaga Community College, appearing the Region III All-Star Game, and at SUNY Potsdam.

Coach Ricker has consistently been supportive of TC3's student-athletes, both on and off the court, a quality he shares with new Head Coach Stevenson.

Janita Moricette

Assistant Coach

Janita MoricetteCoach Moricette joins the staff for the 2014-15 campaign. A graduate of TC3 and an Enrollment Services Specialist at the College, her work with the athletic department dates back to her days as a student when she worked as a manager for TC3 Hall of Famer Brent Doane's women's basketball program. She was a captain of her high school team in the Bronx before an injury ended her playing career. She finished high school as a manager, helping the coaching staff as needed. After her time with the TC3 women's program, she coached several AAU teams back in the Bronx, gaining experience that she will bring to the bench at TC3.
