TC3 Volleyball Comes Up Just Short Twice

Saturday, September 20, 2014

TC3 volleyball

The Tompkins Cortland Community College volleyball team came up just short twice on Saturday, ultimately going 0-3 on the day against Mohawk Valley Community College, Herkimer College, and Fulton-Montgomery Community College. The home losses drop TC3’s record to 1-9 overall and 0-7 in Region III contests.

In the opener against Mohawk Valley, TC3 won the first two sets, 25-23 and 26-24, but couldn’t put the match away. The visiting Hawks rallied to win the final three sets, 25-19, 25-16, and 15-8. Shay Washington (Newfield H.S./Ithaca) and Jess Meyer (New Roots H.S./Dryden) each had seven kills with Meyer also pulling out nine digs. Brooke Torrey (Dryden H.S./Dryden) had 18 assists.

The second match saw the Panthers drop the opening set, 25-20, before taking the next two, 27-25 and 25-18. But like the first match, TC3 was unable to finish the job, losing the fourth set 25-12 and then dropping the fifth 15-13. Kasey Price (Cincinnatus H.S./Cincinnatus) led the attack with ten kills and five blocks, while Elisabeth Olcott (Fabius-Pompey H.S./Fabius) had eight kills. Valerie Sjoblom (Waverly H.S./Waverly) had a team-best ten assists.

The day’s final match came against a strong Fulton-Montgomery team. The Panthers fell in straight sets, 25-8, 25-17, and 25-12, with Price recording five kills and Torrey handing out five assists.

TC3 returns to the court Wednesday at home against Onondaga Community College. The match starts at 6 p.m.

The win set up a showdown with Herkimer County Community College, with the winner advancing to the tournament championship. Panthers Fall in Five

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

The Tompkins Cortland Community College volleyball team dropped a five game match to SUNY Delhi Wednesday. The loss drops TC3's record to 5-5 while Delhi improves to 12-6 on the season.

The home team came out strong, pulling away from a 7-7 tie in game one to take the opener 25-17. The second game saw Delhi take a 15-9 lead before the Panthers staged a comeback. Powered in part by three aces from Kanami Kotani (Yamagata West H.S./Yamagata, Japan) the Panthers came all the way back to tie the game at 18-18. After trading points until it was tied 21-21, Delhi scored four of the final five to pull out the 25-22 win.

In the third game it was Delhi with the comeback. TC3 moved out to an early lead. The advantage held at 15-11 before the visiting Broncos rallied to tie the game at 19-19. A TC3 timeout wasn't enough to derail the surge as Delhi carried onto a 25-21 win.

TC3 led most of game four, but Delhi was persistent. After the Panthers took a lead at 15-10, the Broncos managed to pull back to within one point at 21-20. The Panthers regrouped, helped by an amazing flat-hand dig by Audrey Cullen (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca), to pull out the 25-22 win.

In the deciding game, TC3 came back from a 5-3 deficit, with two Cullen blocks evening the score at 5-5. After a pair of kills from Kotani, the Panthers led 7-5, but Delhi responded with five straight to take a 10-5 lead. TC3 closed the gap to two points at 11-9 and again at 12-10 and 13-11, but couldn't pull any closer.

Caitlyn Potter (Dryden H.S./Dryden) had another big night with 22 assists and five kills. Cullen had ten kills and ten blocks, while Kotani had seven kills and 18 digs.

The Panthers have a week off before returning to action. TC3 next plays at Onondaga Community College Wednesday, September 29.

Another Sweep for Panthers

Saturday, September 18, 2010

The Tompkins Cortland Community College volleyball team picked up its second straight win Saturday, sweeping Mohawk Valley Community College 25-18, 25-14, 25-10. The win put TC3 back above .500 with an overall record of 5-4. Mohawk Valley falls to 0-5 on the season.

The Panthers set the tone for the day early, jumping to a lead in game one. Haley Birkmeyer (Newark Valley H.S./Berkshire) led the early surge, ripping off three service points and a kill to push the lead to 11-4. The balanced attacked that featured kills from four different players helped the home team push the lead to double digits before settling in on the 25-18 final.

It took longer for the Panthers to take control of game two. An 11-4 run, punctuated by a pair of big kills from Konami Kotani (Yamagata West H.S./Yamagata, Japan) put the home team comfortably in front at 16-9, and the lead was never threatened the rest of the way.

The final game again featured a balanced attack, with setter Caitlyn Potter (Dryden H.S./Dryden) efficiently directing the offense. Five different Panthers recorded kills in the final game as the team steadily pulled away to a 19-9 lead. The team closed out the day by scoring six of the last seven points to seal the win.

Potter had another stellar day for the Panthers, handing out 17 assists while recording five kills of her own. Audrey Cullen (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca) ripped eight kills to go with four digs and Kotani finished with seven kills, four digs, and three aces. Kiara Love (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca) put down four kills and Birkmeyer added three kills and two digs.

Panthers Win Opener

Saturday, August 28, 2010

A year ago it took the TC3 volleyball team ten matches to earn its first win. This year the Panthers got in the win column day one, taking a season-opening match from Finger Lakes Community College 3-1. The win by scores of 25-13, 25-22, 17-25, and 25-23 gave TC3 a record of 1-0 for the first time since 2007.

The Panthers dominated the first game, pushing an 8-3 lead to 14-5 and 21-9 before cruising to the win. The second game was much tighter, with TC3 trailing early before taking a lead at 5-4. Finger Lakes stayed within four points the whole way, but TC3 never trailed the rest of the way while winning game two.

The third game saw the Panthers struggle, going from a 3-3 tie to a 13-7 deficit. The margin hit double digits at 20-10 before Finger Lakes finished the game out to force a game four. In the final game, TC3 trailed by as many as six points before taking a time out trailing 14-8. The team responded, including three straight service points by Caitlyn Potter (Dryden H.S./Dryden) to even the game at 15-15. After trading points, Finger Lakes stretched its lead to 19-16, but the Panthers again responded, this time pulling even at 22-22 on an ace by Audrey Cullen (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca). Another Cullen service point gave TC3 a lead, but Finger Lakes answered to tie it at 23-23. The home team pulled out the match, breaking serve and then winning the game on a Finger Lakes error.

Cullen led the attack with a game-high 11 kills to go with three aces. Potter handed out 12 assists while also serving up four aces. Michelle Baisley (Afton H.S./Afton) had a team-best six aces and six kills, and Haley Birkmeyer (Newark Valley H.S./Berkshire) and Josie Roberts (Cortland H.S./Cortland) each added five kills.

The Panthers return to action Saturday, September 4 at Corning.
