Panthers Open Season with Win

Saturday, August 30, 2014

TC3 volleyball

The 2014 season got off to a strong start for the Tompkins Cortland Community College volleyball team Saturday as the Panthers swept Davis College, 3-0. The home win marks the first TC3 since 2011 that TC3 has started the year with a victory. It was the third match of the year for Davis. The Falcons are now 0-3.

The Panthers won by scores of 26-24, 25-16, and 25-17. The first set saw TC3 fall behind by four points early, but rally behind three straight aces by Ashley Morgan (Elmira Free Academy/Elmira) to lead 9-8. The lead grew to 12-9, but Davis answered with a rally of its own to lead 17-14. The Panthers regrouped to reclaim the lead at 21-20, and then lead 23-21 before Davis scored three straight and served for the set. The Panthers broke serve to tie the game at 24-24. A block by Kasey Price (Cincinnatus H.S./Cincinnatus) returned the lead to the home team, and an ace by Brooke Torrey (Dryden H.S./Dryden) gave TC3 the win.

The second and third sets were much less dramatic, thanks in large part to strong serving by the Panthers. In the middle of the second set, Kate Holland (Dryden H.S./Dryden) strung together seven straight service points to give the Panthers a cushion they wouldn’t relinquish. In the third set it was Torrey with the seven-point string, blowing the set open. By the time the day was over, TC3 had a team total of 19 aces, the third most ever by a Panther team in a single match.

Torrey led the way with seven aces to go with 12 assists and three digs. Morgan had five aces and Price had three aces and a team-best six kills. Lily Carlton (Cortland H.S./Cortland) had three aces and Elisabeth Olcott (Fabius-Pompey H.S./Fabius) had four kills for the winners.

Panthers host Cayuga Community College on Wednesday, September 3 at 6 p.m.

Panthers Fall in Five

Tuesday, September 08, 2009

A rally from down two games to none brought the TC3 volleyball team back to a decisive fifth game, but the Panthers ran out of steam in a 12-25, 14-25, 25-11, 25-20, 7-15 loss to Broome Community College Tuesday. TC3 is now 0-3 on the season while Broome improves to 2-2.

The match opened poorly for the home team. After splitting the first eight points, Broome scored 10 of the next 13 to move to a 14-7 lead. TC3 could get no closer than six points the rest of the way, eventually losing 25-14.

The home team finally got things going in game three. A string of four straight service points by Amy Devendorf (Bishop Grimes H.S./Brewerton) gave TC3 the lead at 9-4.
