Financial Aid Regulations That Impact Students' Academic Choices

There are several financial aid issues that come up during the advisement process. The following list of problems may impact your advisees in receiving federal or state financial assistance. Please understand that these are regulatory requirements, the financial aid office cannot change or make exceptions to these requirements.

All students must make satisfactory academic progress according to state or federal guidelines. Catalog page 27 & 28. Brochures are available in the Enrollment Services Center, room 101

TAP issues

  • Students in the first TAP semester must take and complete at least 3 regular/non equivalent credit hours.
  • Students in the second and later TAP semesters must take at least 6 regular/non equivalent credit hours.
  • TAP normally requires full time enrollment; that is at least 12 credits per semester counting both regular and equivalent credits. There are two exceptions to this rule:
    1. Students that have a disability may receive TAP as a less than full time student. That disability must be on file in the Baker Center. This requires a special certification by the Registrar/TAP Certifying Officer and students should contact the Registrar if there is a problem.
    2. Beginning for the Fall semester 2007, a student may enroll part time and receive TAP under the following conditions:
      1. Student must have received their first TAP award for Fall 2006 or after.
      2. Student must have enrolled full time for 2 consecutive semesters on or after Fall 2006.
      3. Student must have earned 24 regular regular semester credits in those 2 full time semesters with a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
      4. From that point on, a student may enroll on a less than full time basis and receive TAP.
      5. This will require a special certification by the Registrar/Certifying Officer. At the writing of this guideline, the procedures were not finalized.
  • TAP will not pay for any repeated coursework that the student has already completed with a passing grade unless required for the degree. Example: student retakes a course in which they have received a C-. Student is enrolled for 12 credits. The student’s degree program does not require a C or better for graduation. Student is not eligible for TAP. However, if the student is enrolled for 12 other credits that count towards the degree AND the course in which they received a C-, they are eligible for TAP.
  • TAP requires enrollment in coursework that meets the degree requirements. Example: A student is not eligible if they enroll in 9 credits that count towards the degree and 3 credits that do not count. However, if a student wants to take non-degree counting courses, they need to be enrolled for 12 degree credits and any number of credits that do not count towards their degree.
  • TC3 does not have any provision for Dual Majors. Thus, enrollment credits only pertain to the degree in which the student is matriculated.
  • Students in the last semester at TC3 and who will graduate at the end of the semester are allowed to enroll full time and in coursework that does not meet degree requirements. Example: student needs 6 credits to graduate, enrolls for the 6 necessary and 6 additional credits, they are eligible for TAP.

Federal Issues

Federal regulations mirror TAP issues 4, 5 and 6 above.

A student is limited to 24 equivalent credit hours. Once a student has enrolled in 24 equivalent credits, they cannot receive any aid for additional equivalent credits. Example: Student has taken 24 equivalent credits and is now enrolled in 8 equivalent credits and 4 regular credits. Federal aid is limited to the 4 credit hours.

Students are required to attend classes in order for aid to be disbursed. Aid is prorated for courses that the student never attends.

Tuition Bills

Tuition bills will not be mailed until the college budget and tuition and fee levels are approved.
