Students who are on academic probation must complete a probation agreement with an advisor. Students must complete the agreement and submit it by the first day of classes for the new semester. Between semesters, advisors will be available at the enrollment services center to assist students when the program advisor is not available. Advisor must give the student a copy of the pamphlet Standards for Academic Progress. Any student who does not complete the probation agreement and submit it by the deadline is de-scheduled from all classes and must re-register after completing the probation interview. During the probation interview, the advisor and student will discuss the reasons contributing to the student’s academic difficulties and strategies for future success. The action plan may include referral to the Baker Commons, the Office of Financial Aid, or the Office of Counseling, Career, and Transfer Services.
When working on a probation agreement, it is important for the advisor to make a note of the meeting and its outcome in the advisor notes section, found under the assessment tab in the student’s information on IQ.Web.
Many probation students will also need to apply for a waiver to receive financial aid. This process occurs at the Dean of Student Life office, and usually requires a copy of the probation agreement be supplied along with the waiver application.
If the probation agreement was completed with the help of another advisor between semesters, the student and program advisor should meet as soon as possible in the new semester to review the agreement and the plan of action for success.
The program advisor should monitor the probation student’s progress carefully. Attendance information is usually available in IQ.Web after about two weeks into the new semester. An attendance problem or a grade of S- or U in the mid-semester progress report will signal a need for more intervention from the advisor.
Students are allowed two semesters’ probation. If, after the second semester on probation, the student is still not in good academic standing, he/she will be suspended. Students may appeal academic suspension and, if they do, the program advisor may be asked for information to help the Committee on Academic Standing (COAS) make a decision about whether to uphold or to deny the appeal.
